Good Day Soulshine

Brothers and Sisters,

Let us gather in celebration of the season and welcome the return of the SUN...

The king doth keep his revels here to-
night.

Take heed the queen come not within his sight;
For Oberon is passing fell and wrath,
Because that she as her attendant hath
A lovely boy, stol'n from an Indian king;
She never had so sweet a changeling;
And jealous Oberon would have the child
Knight of his train, to trace the forests wild;
But she, perforce, withholds the loved boy,
Crowns him with flowers, and makes him all her
joy.

And now they never meet in grove, or green,
By fountain clear, or spangled starlight sheen,
But they do square; that all their elves, for
fear,
Creep into acorn-cups and hide them there.

- Puck (William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream).

Press Play...

This song will on my upcoming CD "Blue Turns Black."

This version is from a live show I did in C'nooga a while back. The new version is sort of an early '80's 'Stones-ed out up-tempo rocker...

I am going to start previewing the whole CD this way, playing demos, writing the lyrics etc...

Here are the lyrics for an unreleased song called Summertime:

Summertime

The radio plays for unsung days
Of sticky city streets
And the cool boys loose it
And the black boys blues it
But the night don’t beat the heat
And everyone’s stylin’
Cause everyone’s smilin’
Filin’ into a line
And if I didn’t know better
I’d be searchin’ for a sweater
But it’s just like Summertime

Radio on the front stoop
“Hey-la my boyfriend’s back”
And there’s a bag lady dancin’ in size 12 shoes
In the light from the laundromat
And the old man there with the tombstone hair
Drinks spodi-odi wine
And the barfly girl does a ballerina twirl
And it’s just like Summertime

Bridge
And the soul sisters sway like chocolate Salomes
And the Puerto Rican boys are in a trance
And no one ever knows what kind of game she plays
But every radio knows all the girls just wanna dance

You gotta meet me on the corner
Where the daytime meets the night
I will be the one with the cigarette
You can be the one with the light
You can be the one I see
When I see a sight divine
Oh angel girl your sunshine curls
Are just like Summertime

I am doing some music writing for a new Memphis-culture site. I am writing a series of articles on the history of soul music to tie in with the Memphis' 50th anniversary of soul celebrations.

Be humble in your sleepy hands on this world.
Be a killer in Heaven.
